Abstract

This study will explore the alignment of the Aquaculture Field School (AFS) methodology, implemented by the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) in Kenya, with the principles of Competency-Based Education (CBE). A qualitative case study design will be employed to analyze how AFS pedagogical practices, curriculum structure, and assessment strategies align with CBE principles. Data will be collected through an in-depth review of AFS training manuals, facilitation guides, national education policy documents, and relevant academic literature. It is anticipated that the findings will highlight the strengths of the AFS model in promoting experiential, learner-centered approaches and mastery of defined competencies, while also identifying areas where structured assessment and systematic tracking of learning outcomes could be enhanced. This study is expected to contribute to broader discussions on integrating experiential agricultural training with national education reforms and to demonstrate the potential of field-based methodologies to strengthen competency development.
